How To Make Naan

A few months ago, I had the amazing opportunity to travel to India. It was an experience that absolutely changed my life. Needless to say, I can't wait to go back! But until then, I'll simply have to try to recreate the delicious food I had there. This bread was probably my favorite thing I ate in India, especially when they served it warm and fresh, with a liberal coating of melted butter on top--so good! This week, I decided I finally had to try to make some for myself, and boy, am I ever happy I did. This recipe is adapted from one on Budget Bytes and makes six delicious pieces of naan.

First, mix together the sugar and warm water, then sprinkle the yeast on top to activate it.

Let it sit for about ten minutes, until the yeast is nice and foamy. Then, stir in the olive oil, yogurt, and half an egg.

In a separate bowl, mix together the salt and flour, then add this to the wet mixture.

Now, knead the dough until all of the flour is incorporated. The dough should have a nice, soft texture.

Then, let it rise for an hour, or until it has doubled in size. Next, divide it into six equal portions, and loosely shape these into balls.

Finally, cook the naan. Roll each ball flat until it is approximately 1/4 inch thick, and cook one at a time over medium heat in a non-stick pan (I ended up using a wok as it was all I had on hand). You should not need to grease the pan. Cook each piece of naan for about two minutes on each side--it will start forming golden-brown bubbles as it cooks, and should no longer feel doughy.

You're all done! The Naan may be served plain, with garlic, and/or melted butter. I topped mine with lots of butter and served it alongside some Tandoori chicken and rice.

Trust me, if you make this recipe, you will ~naan-t~ be disappointed!

The Ingredients:

1 teaspoon active dry yeast

1/2 teaspoon sugar

1/4 cup warm water

1.5 cups flour

1/4 teaspoon of salt

1/2 of an egg

The Method:

1. Combine the yeast, sugar, and water, and let sit for 10 minutes.

2. Add in the olive oil, yogurt, and egg, then the flour and salt.

3. Knead the dough for 3 minutes, then let rise for an hour.

4. Divide dough into 6 equal portions, and roll each of these 1/4 inch thick.

5. Cook for about 2 minutes on each side in a non-stick pan over medium heat.
